(A) There is a pride of lions on the hot and dry savannah. It must traverse a dangerous and hostile land to keep up with the grazing herds that provide its food supply. The members of the pride are plagued by injury, biting insects, parasites, and competing predators such as hyena. Regular meals are a problem since the herd moves often. It is very difficult for the human masses to view these magnificent animals. Only those with large amounts of disposable income can witness this spectacle. (B) There is a pride of lions in a wild animal park. It must traverse a manicured and ecologically balanced land in order to locate the regularly provided nutritionally balanced food drops provided by the curator staff. Veterinary intervention is constantly available to eliminate any parasitic infestation. There are no competing predators. It is somewhat difficult for the masses to witness these magnificent animals. They must have the disposable income to procure transportation outside of the urban environment as well as the entrance fees. (C) There is a pride of lions in a local zoo. These animals are limited to a small enclosure designed to allow for safe and maximum viewing. Regularly provided nutritionally balanced food is provided by the curator staff. Veterinary intervention is constantly available to eliminate any ailment whatsoever. There are no competing predators. It is very easy for the urban masses to view these magnificent beasts. There is subsidized public transportation available. The entry fee is subsidized or even waived for the poor due to tourist fees and public taxes. Since we can only speculate about the lion’s feelings, please evaluate the three scenarios above along human terms. Scenario (A) serves only the elite among us. It discriminates against those lacking the funds to witness such a spectacle.
Scenario (B) is balanced in that it allows a wider cross section of the population to view the spectacle while helping to preserve an endangered species.
Scenario (C) is the only truly democratic way to allow access to the masses for viewing this grand spectacle of nature. Also while helping to preserve an endangered species.
Now let’s pretend we can think like lions. Based on the three choices, the following statement would be true: Scenario (A) This is appalling, I am forced to live at the mercy of nature. I can live free to hunt, but I have no support structure whatsoever.
Scenario (B) I love it! It is pure heaven, I have all my needs provided for me. I am not exactly free, and I no longer enjoy the thrill of the hunt, but hey … you can’t have everything, … besides, it looks just like back home.
Scenario (C) Well, at least I’m making the low-income kiddies happy. I have all my food and veterinary needs provided for me. I don’t have a lot of room to move, but not much reason to move either. Not a lot happens, and maybe that is also good. Day after day I can see their amazed multicultural little faces through the glass and behind the mesh across the moat. Never hunting again is a small sacrifice, allowing the poor to gaze upon me. After all, it’s for the greater good.
